It’s easy to focus on the negatives after a final defeat, but one positive to take from the match was the colossal showing from Scott McTominay. The search for a defensive midfielder is a hot topic, but the young Scot was brilliant accompanying Pogba last night - thriving off Frenchman's quality.
Scott looked one of the only players that could make something happen with his persistant intensity, and ultimately the ineptness of the majority of the rest of the side was a costly factor. As aforementioned, his influx of urgency combined with elite stamina enabled his driving force in the engine room.
He widely emphasised his multifunctionality by dropping deep to defend whilst also surging forward when we are attacking, both completed effectively. He operated super efficiently in the deeper pivot role, exacerbating the versatility that has grown into his game over recent times. There is a clear possession of confidence to carry the ball when possible, running the show with this ability in conjunction with his strength and stature. In that more sitting role, his aggression is a virtue and is something the could prove key to his continued development within the pivot. His belief in duels and challenges has shown to lead to some excellent execution.
I was impressed with him all season, and last night's showing really stood out.
